These are the questions that a young French person looking for an internship in an American consulting firm must answer. How did we get here? If the history of ideas cannot yet attest to its influence, a metapolitical movement called "woke" at least has the merit of sparking debate. Indeed, at the heart of various issues, this movement animates collective passions. Between the return of ideology, the loss of identity and totalitarianism: the media are crazy about it. To understand its recent, but nevertheless spectacular, spread in France, it is essential to go back to the origins of this school of thought straight from the United States. Although it is now in our dictionaries, the term "wokism" is a distortion of "awake", meaning to be awake. In 1938, at the end of his song "Scottsboro Boys", the American bluesman Lead Belly advised everyone to stay woke. Thirty years later, as segregationist policies began to be abolished, Martin Luther King took up this expression again, speaking directly to young people. From its inception, this movement was intended to warn the African-American community in response to the discrimination it suffered. As for the modern woke movement, it took shape in August 2014 following the murder of the young African-American Michael Brown, killed by law enforcement. In 2020, the death of George Floyd reactivated the "Black Lives Matter" movement and gave it global scope.
