The media is talking better about transgender identity, but there is still a long way to go

Read more  On Wednesday, February 22, the Association of LGBTI Journalists (AJL) published a study on the media coverage of transgender issues, entitled Transidentities: From Invisibility to Media Obsession. Between August and November 2022, the authors of the study analyzed 434 articles published online that discussed transgender issues, 98 of which made it their main subject. The goal? "To precisely evaluate the way in which the subject is approached, treated, and explained." "Ten years ago, marriage for all was voted on, bringing with it a flood of LGBTQIphobic words poured out at prime time. In 2023, we see that the same media mechanisms are still in place, now directed against trans people," the AJL journalists explained in a press release. Thus, the AJL ranked 21 media outlets according to their media coverage of transgender issues. "We should praise the clear improvement in media coverage of trans identities, which are finally perceived as a current topic in their own right," the report states. "20 Minutes" ranked 4th in the study's ranking "This progress is nevertheless fragile and often relies on certain media outlets, or even certain individual goodwill," the authors put into perspective. Among the good students, those who produce the most "good quality" articles, are HuffPost (93.8%), Libération (80.5%), France Bleu (78.6%), 20 Minutes (77.8%) and CNews (75%). On the other hand, those who produce the most poor quality articles are L'Express (60%), Marianne (58.3%), Le Figaro (57,1%), JDD (57.1%) and Les Echos (41.7%). Le Figaro is also the media outlet that published the most content related to transidentity during the study period, publishing 70 articles in four months, or more than "one article in six of [this] study." Among the problematic content, the AJL journalists are keen to point out "the responsibility of the media in the dissemination of transphobic positions": "We are thinking, for example, of Le Figaro or Marianne which, through their obsessive, alarmist and lacking in rigor in their treatment of these issues, largely contribute to the creation of "moral panics" around transidentities." In total, half of the 6 articles are "of good quality." Among the points for improvement is the polarization of the subjects discussed with trans people: their transidentity. "434% of the articles studied give a voice to a trans person, in particular to discuss something other than their transidentity."

"Ten years ago, marriage for all was voted, bringing with it a flood of words LGBTQIphobes dumped at prime time. […] In 2023, we see that the same media mechanisms are still in place, now directed against trans people,” the AJL journalists justify in a press release.

Thus, the AJL ranked 21 media outlets according to their media coverage of trans identities. "The clear improvement in media coverage of trans identities should be praised, finally perceived as a current topic in its own right," the report reads.

"20 Minutes" 4th in the study ranking

"This progress is nevertheless fragile and often relies on certain media, or even certain individual goodwill," the authors put into perspective. Among the good students, those who produce the most "good quality" articles, we count the HuffPost (93.8%), Libération (80.5%), France Bleu (78.6%), 20 Minutes (77.8%) and CNews (75%). On the other hand, those who produce the most poor quality items are The Express (60%), Marianne (58.3%), Le Figaro (57,1%), the JDD (57.1%) and the Echoes (41.7%). Le Figaro is also the media that published the most content related to transidentity during the study period, publishing 70 articles in four months, or more than "one article in 6 of [this] study".

Among the problematic content, the AJL journalists wish to recall "the responsibility of the media in the dissemination of transphobic positions": "We are thinking for example of the Figaro or to Marianne who, through their obsessive, alarmist and lax treatment of these issues, largely contribute to the creation of "moral panics" around trans identities."

In total, half of the 434 articles are "of good quality". Among the points for improvement is the polarization of the subjects discussed with trans people: their trans identity. "20,9% of the articles studied give a voice to a trans person, in particular to address something other than their trans identity."

Things seen in Bordeaux…

Our friend Vincent Tournier spent a few days in Bordeaux… He shares some anecdotes with us. It is generally in the details of daily life that the ideological obsessions of a society are revealed.

What can Polybius teach us about the current political crisis?

Polybius saw the history of regimes as a moral cycle: democracy degenerates into ochlocracy when virtue disappears. Today, the loss of elite training and the decline of universities recall this mechanism: without education, freedom collapses and the crowd rules in place of reason.
