“Als”, “ouvertx”, “connux”: an exam written in an extremely inclusive style causes controversy in Lyon 2

Read more  Sunday, May 14, 2023 at 07:51 a.m. It was the UNI that raised the alarm. By publishing on social networks the subject of a law exam at Lyon 2 University, the right-wing student union caused a wave of astonishment among those who read the text. The latter is written in inclusive writing, but in an extreme form. The student is even asked to respond to the practical cases using "standard or inclusive French, with the form of inclusiveness (which he masters)". Thus, the story of Arti and Maki is narrated. The two are German and non-binary and "als live in France". They have a child and then want to divorce. The subject suggests words such as "health professionals", "Arti opened up about it" or "the child was recognized in the civil registry". Each time, they are indicated by an asterisk. "Under the pretext of inclusiveness, certain words are invented! Exam subjects must not be the place for woke propaganda!" denounced UNI Lyon.

— UNI Lyon (@LyonUni) May 10, 2023 Contacted by Le Progrès, Lyon 2 University recalled that each teacher is free to choose the form of writing for their course, midterm or exam. And that it would only intervene if the text was racist or denigrated a person. It also confirmed the authenticity of the copies reported by UNI, because many were crying fake since there is a typo in the date of the exam. Faced with this controversy that is increasingly attracting the attention of elected officials and public figures, the teacher-researcher at the origin of this practical case concerning Arti and Maki plans to speak out in the coming days.

Both are German and non-binary and "als live in France". They have a child and then want to divorce. The subject suggests words such as "health professionals", "Arti opened up about it" or "the child was recognized in the civil registry". Each time, they are indicated by an asterisk.

"Under the pretext of inclusiveness, some words are invented! Exam topics should not be the place for woke propaganda!", denounced UNI Lyon.

Contacted by progress, Lyon 2 University recalled that each teacher is free to choose the form of writing for their course, partial or exam. And that it would only intervene if the text was racist or denigrated a person. It also confirmed the authenticity of the copies reported by the UNI, because many were crying fake since there is a typo in the date of the exam.

Faced with this controversy, which is increasingly attracting the attention of elected officials and public figures, the teacher-researcher behind this practical case concerning Arti and Maki plans to speak out in the coming days.
