Sandrine Rousseau's hunting rifles: the story of a hoax

It's the opening of the hunting season! And some game weighs more than others. On September 21, the first hearing of the trial of Sandrine Rousseau, prosecuted criminally by the National Federation of Hunters, will take place.

The facts date back to February 22, 2022. On the set of the show “Les 4 Vérités” on France 2, our national ecofeminist gets carried away:

“It is not a hobby to go and kill animals on the weekend with guns. And […] the rest of the week, we can also point it at his wife. We have seen that one in four femicides is linked to a hunting weapon, one in four femicides! »

According to almost all media, Sandrine Rousseau would draw thisall statistics from the website of the collective “Femicides by spouse or ex-spouse”, which counts spousal murders committed in France.

... and it is totally wrong. The statistics " 1/4 of femicides committed by hunting weapons » does not appear anywhere on their site: and their data even indicates a much lower figure.

S. Rousseau only takes up false information due to two anti-hunting activists: Camille Leguillon known as “Ollune” and Moran Kerinec, freelancer at Reporterre/Slate.

How did we get here? This is an opportunity to dive into the strange world of woke conspiracy theories. We will "learn" that the government distributes rifles to hunters and covers up their crimes, and that justice and the media knowingly organize a " omerta » around femicides. ..

We will see above all how two obscure activists can rig a figure immediately swallowed by politicians and the media, with little or no verification.

Act I: An anti-speciesist falsifies the figures of the “Fémincide” collective

Our story begins on November 9, 2021 on the Instagram account of Camille Leguillon known as “Ollune Cilimaleg”, anti-speciesist and especially anti-hunting activist, member of the collective “Abolissons La Vénerie”

That day, a driver is accidentally killed by a hunter. Immediately, anti-speciesist circles use this as a pretext to demand the abolition of hunting, a sport that is " meurtrier » practiced by a « armed minority »From« real weapons of war "!

Alas for them, The figures clearly show that hunting, which is very regulated, is extremely safe. : accident statistics are similar to those of horse riding[1].

But our activist Ollune has found a solution: to inflate the figure, she will add... homicides committed with hunting weapons.

This is already absurd: if a madman murders his neighbor by running him over with his car, is it a "traffic accident"? This is confusing deliberate abuse and accidents due to use. But Ollune wants at all costs a security pretext to save Bambi... and will go so far as to defraud to obtain it, as we will see.

Ollune is an illustrator: she details her research in a nice instagram slideshow with the sensationalist title: our exhibit #1.

(EDIT: Ollune deleted his slideshow, but you can find it again here)

The shape and colors are going to be very girly, the bottom less. Ollune will quickly fall into a rather worrying conspiracy.

She first addresses the Ministry of the Interior… which obviously does not have this absurd figure. When he learns it, Ollune explodes. It can't be a coincidence: They were asked to hide the truth me on deadly hunters!

Ollune will insist: not only does the government carefully avoid " dissect "(sic) homicide statistics - meaning: he protects hunters. But he even goes so far as to distribute guns to them!

Faced with the guilty silence of the ministry, Ollune decides to change his method.
She will extrapolate her figure from the statistics... of femicides.
But not just any: those of “Femicides by spouse or ex-spouse” collective

We quickly understand why our anti-speciesist finds it " unbelievable ": The Femicides collective follows the same conspiracy line as Ollune. Every procedural delay, every off-key word from a journalist... is taken as proof of the "complicity" of the press and the justice system in hiding femicides.

A journalist mentions a possible suicide instead of a murder? This is the #complicitpress[2]... A magistrate refuses (logically) to comment on a current case? We shout at the #accomplicejustice and #OMERTA[3]. Does AFP keep a more objective count?Accomplice " too[4] !

The collective's "count" is indeed determined to include the "tragedies of old age" (suicides of elderly and sick couples) as well as femicides, even when letters attest to the contraryMagistrates and journalists who dare to mention them are obviously “accomplices”…

Ollune then “peels” the 2020 data from the Femicides collective. Out of 107 murders (104 femicides and 3 collateral victims)[5], it counts 26 kills by hunting rifle: or approximately 25%.

The figure “1/4 of femicides are due to hunting rifles” was born.

... but by redoing the count of Ollune, we only find 11 deaths instead of 26! My data is available here. What happened? A mistake is very unlikely, just read the table. Add 1 or 2 carelessly, maybe… but almost triple the number?

There is no longer any doubt: Ollune simply inflated the figure from 11 to 26.

And we can see why it was tempting: Ollune will then extrapolate this percentage to all homicides committed in France with… a beast rule of three – a statistician would scream. Writing “26 femicides” instead of “11” would therefore be multiplying the total number of people killed by hunting weapons by… 236%. Hard to resist![6]

Let's summarize: Ollune makes us believe that the count of the collective "Femicides..." counts not 11 deaths by firearms, but 26... or 1/4 of the total number of femicides. And we will see the press blindly repeat this figure without ever thinking of verifying it at the source.

Act II: An anti-hunting freelancer spreads and “confirms” the figure

Ollune's slideshow alone doesn't have much impact.[7]. A few activists are taking it up on social media – but nothing more.

His rigged percentage would probably have gone unnoticed, if he had not been spotted by a young anti-hunting freelancer: Moran Kerinec, 28 years old, very left-wing, working in particular for Slate and Rue 89.

On December 9, 2021 (one month after the Ollune slideshow), he will repeat his figure in an article for the environmentalist newspaper Reporterre, and based on the same strategy: to scare people at all costs by adding, to the rare accidents, deaths which do not arise from the normal use of hunting weapons.

More astute than Ollune, Moran Kerinec adds suicides to the homicides, which are much more numerous. And he stops at nothing to grab the reader by the guts: illustration dripping with hemoglobin, words exaggerated to the point of absurdity : " Injuries and deaths [in hunting accidents] are increasing "! Their number, already very low, has nevertheless been divided by six in twenty years....

After the flood of pathos, there is an "avalanche" of news items. Moran Kerinec wants us to believe that if we don't "doesn't grasp the magnitude" of the carnage caused by hunting weapons, is that the facts are " scattered in the regional presse”. A pompous “ database "bringing them together will prove that it is urgently needed" reduce the number of weapons in circulation " (understand: massively confiscate hunters' weapons).

In reality, This "database" is a joke. It is a meager Excel file of barely a hundred entries. Compared to the 10 suicides and homicides committed per year in France, that makes... barely 000%.. And Mr. Kerinec dares, without laughing, to draw generalizations and “analyses” from it!

And it doesn't make any sense, because "Hunting weapons" do not exist in themselves. A so-called "hunting" rifle can also be intended for other uses (ball-trap, CAS, etc.), a rifle too. Affirm to identify them with the " caliber used » makes you smile. Repeat learnedly that « Hunting weapons fall into categories B[8] (Sic!) etc " makes you cry! From the beginning, Mr. Kerinec discusses seriously the dangerousness of apples… using statistics on pears.

And there, it is inexcusable: two minutes of Wikipedia research would have been enough. How could the Reporterre editorial team accept such an article? It does not come out of it enhanced.

We now understand why Mr. Kerinec will cite Ollune's figure without thinking twice.

Better, he would later claim to have "confirmed" it with its absurd "database". We'll see in another article why this is mathematically impossible and suggests data manipulation.

There you have it: Ollune's rigged statistic ("1/4 of femicides due to hunting weapons") now has the support of a recognized environmentalist newspaper... and no one is going to doubt it anymore.

Act III: Sandrine Rousseau announcement the figure to the media

Three months later, Sandrine Rousseau is on the set of "Les 4 Vérités" on France 2. It's an opportunity to practice a old recipe of feminism Woke : to bring out the most outrageous accusation possible against an eternal culprit (White, heterosexual) or a unprotected minority (practicing Catholics, rural people, here hunters).

The effect is twofold: first, you create buzz without risk by attacking a group that cannot defend itself; second, you mobilize your own activists. Woke. The technique is well known at EELV: think of Caroline de Haas and Alice Coffin – « we must eliminate men from our lives », etc.

Seen from this angle, “1/4 of femicides are due to hunting weapons” is the ideal little phrase. It is not the poor million hunters who will be able to defend themselves against this in the media. And the faction " ecofeminist » (anti-speciesists and feminists) woke) by Sandrine Rousseau will be delighted, a few months before the necessary mobilization for the presidential elections.

Madame Rousseau therefore comes out with her sentence… with the expected success : rural people are outraged (and powerless), anti-hunting people are exultant… and all the media are talking about it.

However, only one person will decide to check the figure: TF1. And this is the most scandalous moment of the whole affair.

The journalist is unlikely to detect the fraud: as a fact-check, he will… literally copy Mr. Kerinec’s article., which took up Ollune's rigged statistics and attributed them to the collective "Femicides...".

Better! He then appropriates his sources (the scientists Alexa Delbreil and Jean-Louis Senon), presenting them as if he had found them alone. And, as a final kick in the ass, deigns to cite the Reporterre article, from which he has just plundered 80% of the content, for the remaining meager 20%.[9]… let this serve as a lesson to Mr. Kerinec: you can always find someone more dishonest than yourself.

The case came to light again on August 25, when it was announced that the FNC had filed a complaint. No other media (France TV News, Ouest-France...) will then verify the figures attributed to the Femicides collective

Some will even add inaccurate facts.. Rémy Dodet of Le Nouvel Observateur thus affirms that the collective corroborates its figures with " statistics official »

Nothing like this appears on the website of the “Femicide” collective… and for good reason! We have seen how distrustful there are of "complicit" institutions.

This additional inaccuracy (which contributes to giving credibility to S. Rousseau's rigged statistic) will also be taken up as is by the Huffington Post a few hours later...

_____

I'll stop my story there. In the end, we don't know which ones are the most pitiful. : our two little number-tweaking rascals, Sandrine Rousseau incapable of verifying a percentage before announcing it to the French, and especially the major media too busy jumping on the slightest buzz who goes to the trouble of doing an addition.

And it's time for them to get a grip.. Otherwise, the “1/4 of femicides due to hunting weapons” will join "French was masculinized in the 17th century" and " Europeans are the main culprits of slavery " in the Pantheon of untruths woke in fashion… and for a long time. Because the most worrying thing is not that these lies arise from nothing: it is that they never die.
