That a great medieval historian, a member of the Resistance and a victim of the Nazis as well as some French citizens, executed in 1945, should be honored in this way is certainly cause for celebration. More questionable, however, are a number of instances of appropriation and misappropriation that are not only the work of politicians, but also originate within the historical profession itself. This is nothing new.
